Principles of CQC

1. Speed
2. Surprise
3. Violence of Action

Fundamentals of CQC

1. Eliminate the threat
2. Dominate the room
3. Don't move faster than you can engage targets, engage all targets in your sector
4. Control the situation: establish security
5. Search the room
6. Search the dead, search the wounded
7. Treat casualties
8. Prep for exfil

Elements of a Fire Command

  1. Alert ("203 Gunner!")
  2. Direction (Clock, Cardinal, General, Tracer, TRP Reference, Laser)
  3. Target Description ("Troops in the open")
  4. Range ("200m")
  5. Method of engagement ("Three rounds")
  6. Command to fire ("At my command" or "Fire at will")

Fire with Respect to the Gun

  1. Search: gun moves vertically, moving rounds through depth of target
  2. Traverse: gun moves side to side, moving through breadth of target
  3. Traverse and Search: gun moves vertically and side to side, moving the rounds across the breadth and depth of the target
  4. Swinging Traverse: the guns elevation is locked and traversing lever is disengaged, allowing the gun to move freely metal to metal, at the same elevation. This will move rounds literally quicker rather than traversing
  5. Fixed: gun T and E is locked, aiming the cone of fire at a point target where depth and width of the beaten zone will cover the target
  6. Free Gun: the gun is free of the T and E, and can move in any direction

Fire with Respect to the Ground

  1. Grazing: the danger zone extends from the muzzle of weapon to the beaten zone (standard for the M240B is 1m off the ground out to 600m)
  2. Plunging: the danger zone is practically confined to the beaten zone

Fire with Respect to the Target

  1. Frontal: a target moving towards or away from the gun, which requires you to search the gun to maintain fire on the target
  2. Flanking: a target moving laterally to the gun, requiring you to traverse the gun to maintain fires on the target
  3. Oblique: a target moving both laterally and towards or away from the gun, requiring you to search and traverse the gun to maintain fires on the target
  4. Enfilade: long axis of beaten zone coincides with the long axis of the target (enfilade can apply to all 3 other fires with respect to the target)
